Basic EMDR Training Eligibility Requirements
Licensed Mental Health Professionals
- Qualifying medical doctors must be licensed to practice in their state or province.
- Qualifying advanced practice registered nurses must have a Master of Science in Nursing (or higher) with a specialization in psychiatric mental health nursing and must be licensed to practice through their state board or province.
- Qualifying Mental Health Clinicians must have a master’s degree in the mental health field (Counseling, Marriage Family Therapy, Psychology, Psychiatry, Social Work) or related mental health discipline and be licensed to practice through their state board or province.
- Individuals who only hold a chemical dependency or substance abuse license are not eligible as these licenses generally do not allow for a mental health scope of practice.
Pre-Licensed Mental Health Professionals
- These are clinicians who are actively pursuing a mental health license through their state board (or province) while working under a licensed supervisor. Some of these license types include associate, intern, limited, provisional, temporary and pre-license.
- Qualifying pre-licensed mental health clinicians must have a master’s degree in the mental health field (Counseling, Marriage Family Therapy, Psychology, Psychiatry, Social Work) or related mental health discipline and must be actively pursuing a full license through their state board (or province) while working under a licensed supervisor.
- Individuals who only hold a chemical dependency or substance abuse license are not eligible as these licenses generally do not allow for a mental health scope of practice.
Graduate Students
- Qualifying graduate students must be enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program in the mental health field (Counseling, Marriage Family Therapy, Psychology, Psychiatry, Psychiatric Nursing, Social Work) or related mental health discipline. Students must have completed their core graduate academic coursework and must be in the practicum/internship portion of their graduate program. First year graduate students are not eligible. Graduate students must be on a licensing track and working under the supervision of a fully licensed mental health clinician.
- Graduate students who would like to take an EMDR Training will need to submit certain documentation (graduate transcript, practicum or internship details, and a letter from their supervisor which includes the supervisor’s license information and number) in order to verify their eligibility. Students do not need to provide EMDRIA with any documentation unless specifically asked to do so by EMDRIA staff. Any documentation that needs to be submitted would go directly to the training provider either prior to or during the training registration process.
Additional Requirements
- Attendees must have actual clients to practice with for presentation during the consultation calls. If you do not have clients for whatever reason, you can contact us prior to registering for the training (or if you have already registered prior the start of the training) to figure out if we can delay your consultation calls or if it make more sense to delay your training.

Yes.
Are LAC allowed? I'm from AZ

The question is, are you licensed to practice psychotherapy in your state? If so, then yes. If not, then now. j
I am an LICDC in Ohio, with a masters in psychology and Addiction Counseling, would I qualify?
I have a master's degree in rehabilitation counseling, a CRC (Certified rehabilitation counselor) and I'm in the process of getting my LAC (Licensed addiction counselor). Am I eligible?
The certification and addiction license do not qualify you; however, if you're considering getting an LPC we could qualify her if you're under an LPC supervisor.

Hello, I am a CMHC graduate student. I have completed all of my core requirements and I will begin my internship after I complete my practicum requirements in May 2019. The only supervisor that I have is the one from my practicum site and my professor. Would a letter from my professor be sufficient? Am I eligible to attend this upcoming training?
If you're doing your practicum, then yes.
Are LSWs eligible or only LSCWs?
Hi Tammmy,
If your are Licensed by your state as a social worker qualified to do mental health counseling then you are eligible. As an LSW you may be under supervison, but in that case, you still are eligible.

After taking this training, will I be certified as an EMDR specialist? I am an LCPC and licensed in Illinois.
At the end of this training you are a Fully trained EMDR therapist and this is the pathway to work towards certification in EMDR. However, Certification is the next step, and this training, itself, does not make you certified. With this training you will be qualified to use EMDR with most all of your clients, the only exception being clients diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder, in which case you would want further consultation. j
After this training, you will be a fully trained EMDR therapist qualified to do EMDR with most clients. "Certified" requires an advanced level of training, of which this training is the first step. j
Do you have a specific format or sample for the letter of the supervisor?
Students who would like to take the basic training will need to submit the following documentation to determine eligibility for registering for an EMDRIA Approved Basic EMDR Training: graduate transcript, practicum or internship hours, curriculum vita, and a letter from their current supervisor which includes the supervisor’s degree information, licensure information, and license number.
As an LPC-Intern, which selection do I make for my cart?
The Intern rate.

I don't think you would be eligible. Need to be LPC or LPC Intern.
I have a Masters in Education and a Masters in Counseling and Guidance. Am I eligible for the training?
I have a masters degree in nursing (and am a family nurse practitioner) as well as an accredited coach with the International Coaching Federation. Would I qualify?
Hi Rick,
No, you need to be licensed by a state as a mental health provider.
You can check with EMDRIA.org directly to see what they say, but I don't think so.
Thanks,
Jordan
HI Mr. Shafer I am an LPC, but currently work for a school district as a special education counselor. I have 3 questions:
1. Regarding the payment options: Since I work for a school district, would that qualify me as a non-profit?
2. After this training is complete, what other requirements are needed to become EMDR certified.
3. What might a two-hour consultation look like.
1. Yes.
2. This link may take you to EMDRIA for info on certification: https://www.emdria.org/page/21
3. Trainees present cases and feedback is given.
Does the non-profit price apply to me if work for a non-profit organization?
Yes
