At one point anxiety served you well and protected you from something frightening and/or uncomfortable. However, now your body’s alert system has become stuck in the “ON” position even though there currently is little to no evidence of danger. With EMDR, we can reset your alert system. It would be impossible to remove your protective fight or flight response, and we certainly would not want to. Nor do we diminish it’s ability to respond. However, we can work with it so it relearns how to turn “ON” when there is a valid reason for protection and then to turn “OFF” when the threat has passed.
