The scheduler on the phone was kind, but her voice carried that bureaucratic edge: โEarliest MRI appointment is three weeks out.โ
A part of me could have gone straight into resistanceโThis is unacceptable. We need it sooner. Why canโt theyโฆ
But instead, something quieter stepped in. A clear sense of the next step. Call another clinic. Follow the thread.
It wasnโt โmeโ pushingโit was simply what was there to do.
In nondual teachings, โas it isโ is more than a phraseโitโs a pointer. It doesnโt mean shrugging and doing nothing. It means seeing reality clearly, without the extra layer of โthis shouldnโt be happening,โ and moving from that clarity.
When we think weโre the โdoer,โ action tends to come with tensionโgripping, forcing, defending. But when the โIโ drops out, action can arise cleanly. Consciousness moves through us, is not something we have to manufacture, drive, or own.
Sometimes action is whatโs required. Not to change what is, but to be with it fully. That might mean making a phone call, having a conversation, or setting a boundary.
I remember a therapist who rented my office once stayed long past the agreed time. Accepting the situation didnโt mean I smiled and waited until he felt like leaving. Acceptance meant being fully with the fact that this was happeningโand from there, handing him the plan to wrap it up.
Thatโs the paradox: acceptance isnโt always comfortable. It doesnโt necessarily mean taking action to change what feels unwanted. But when action arises from Presence instead of reactivity, it carries a different qualityโlighter, cleaner, without the residue of โmeโ trying to fix the world.
As I like to say, itโs not about what is wanted or needed, but what is required.
