Overview & Requirements

While EMDR is considered an integrative psychotherapy, many clinicians often struggle with how to identify which clients would most benefit from integrating Internal Family Systems (IFS) approach into EMDR therapy for comprehensive trauma treatment.ย  In this training, Dr. Fatter will help clinicians identify clinical signs that warrant use of a multi-modal treatment, including for complex trauma treatment.

Dr. Fatter will present on the history of applying parts work models in EMDR treatment and discuss the shared theoretical healing principles of specifically Internal Family Systems Therapy and EMDR. How an IFS/EMDR integrative approach fits within an EMDR trauma-recovery model including the role of working memory theory and memory reconsolidation will be addressed.ย

Participants will practice developing an integrative case conceptualization and practice hands-on application of specific parts work interventions with adults. Multiple practical integrative interventions for each phase of the eight phases of EMDR therapy will specifically be taught that can support stabilization, enhance resource development, strengthen working alliance and client motivation, support desensitization and strengthening therapeutic gains. Participants will also have the opportunity to identify therapist parts in their own system to help navigate countertransference, vicarious trauma, and complicated relational dynamics that can emerge in the therapeutic relationship when providing EMDR trauma treatment.ย

Dr. Fatter will offer practical strategies for working with parts of a client with complex traumaโ€”including ways to address internal polarizations, address blocking beliefs, and how to identify EMDR targets. Applications of EMDR/IFS integration with marginalized communities and with individuals experiencing ongoing trauma exposure will be discussed. Specific integrative interventions to work withย  intergenerational, historical, and collective trauma, dissociation, working with addictions, and chronic illness will also be taught.ย

This workshop will be didactic, interactive, and experiential. Videos, case examples, and live demonstrations will provide participants an opportunity see an integrative parts work approach in EMDR in action. Experiential practicum time will give participants an opportunity to practice interventions and learn hands-on skills.

This workshop is intended for clinicians who have completed the EMDR Basic Therapist training through an EMDRIA approved training provider.

  8. Utilize a collaborative approach of parts in the clientsโ€™ system to conduct effective resource development installation.
  9. Distinguish between trauma rooted in intergenerational or historical trauma andย  present day trauma.
  10. Demonstrate how to ask protector parts for consent to do EMDR reprocessing on an identified trauma target.
  11. Apply at least two IFS/EMDR integrativeย  interventions during EMDR reprocessing to case examples to help move through blocked processing.
