There is limited research on using EMDR therapy with neurodiverse clients. This workshop’s focus is to provide an overview of the research findings available and to help clinicians develop a neurodiverse perspective when working with neurodivergent clients in clinical settings (Chapman & Botha, 2023). This will include cautions, recommendations, and tips for working with neurodivergent clients and adaptations to EMDR processing with neurodivergent clients, including with children and adults. A review of how autism and complex posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms can present with similar symptoms and how clinicians can assess for differences or comorbidity is provided. An overview of the EMDR Autism protocol to use with autism is presented (Paulson, 2022). The participants will review two video demonstrations of an adaptive preparation exercise for two neurodiverse clients.
This live, online 3-hour, EMDRIA-approved, webinar course, created and taught by Amanda Martin, PhD, LMFT-S, LPC, BCN, and Jose Carbajal, Ph.D., LCSW, and is filled with an easy instructional guide including live demonstrations, sample forms, and practical strategies for in-session exercises and client homework exercises.
This workshop is intended for Licensed (fully licensed and associates) and Pre-Licensed (graduate students) Mental Health Professionals. This workshop is not limited to EMDR trained clinicians, so that non-EMDR trained therapists are welcome.
