How to Become EMDR Certified: Requirements and Step-by-Step Guide

TL;DR

  • Completing EMDR Basic Training makes a clinician EMDR trained. EMDR certification, the EMDRIA Certified Therapist™ credential, is a separate credential earned afterward.
  • To apply, clinicians need an independent license, at least two years of experience in their field, 50 EMDR sessions with at least 25 clients, 20 hours of consultation, 12 EMDRIA Credits, and three letters of recommendation.
  • Only consultation and EMDRIA Credits completed after Basic Training count.
  • The application costs $150 for EMDRIA members and $350 for non-members. The credential is renewed every two years.
  • Coming in early 2027: The CompassionWorks Way, an online cohort program for EMDR-trained clinicians working toward EMDRIA certification, with 20 hours of consultation included. Join the interest list to hear when enrollment opens.

Many clinicians finish EMDR Basic Training, start using EMDR with clients, and then ask what comes next. For many, the answer is EMDR certification. EMDRIA publishes the EMDR certification requirements, but they are spread across several pages, and a few details regularly catch applicants off guard. This guide puts them in one place, in the order most clinicians complete them.

EMDR Trained vs. EMDR Certified: What’s the Difference?

An EMDRIA-approved Basic Training includes 20 hours of didactic instruction, 20 hours of supervised practicum, and 10 hours of consultation. Completing all of it makes a clinician EMDR trained and ready to use EMDR with clients within their scope of practice.

Certification is optional and comes later. EMDRIA grants it to licensed clinicians who have shown advanced competency in EMDR therapy beyond Basic Training.

Who Is Eligible for EMDR Certification?

Two conditions come first. The clinician must be fully licensed for private, independent practice, and must have completed an EMDRIA-approved Basic Training in its entirety, consultation hours included.

Clinicians still working under supervision toward full licensure cannot apply yet, but they can start working toward certification before they’re fully licensed. One thing to plan for: consultation hours must fall within the five years before the application date, so hours started too early may no longer count by the time they apply.

How to Become EMDR Certified, Step by Step

  1. Complete an EMDRIA-approved Basic Training. All parts count, including the consultation hours. The final certificate starts the clock, because consultation and EMDRIA Credits only count from that date. See upcoming EMDR Basic Trainings, or compare formats in Online vs. In-Person EMDR Training.
  2. Use EMDR with a range of clients. The target is 50 sessions with at least 25 different clients. EMDRIA asks for a notarized statement, not session records, but a simple log kept from the start makes that statement easy to sign. For how clinicians build EMDR into a caseload, read After the Training.
  3. Decide on EMDRIA membership before applying. Membership is not required. However, members pay $150 to apply instead of $350, the discount is not applied retroactively, and Associate Members must upgrade to Full membership first.
  4. Complete 20 hours of consultation. Work with an EMDRIA Approved Consultant™; EMDRIA keeps a directory of Approved Consultants. The rules:
    • At least 10 hours must be individual. The rest can be individual, group, or both.
    • Consultation groups can have up to eight participants.
    • A Consultant in Training can provide up to 15 of the 20 hours.
    • Hours must fall within the five years before the application date.
    • With more than one consultant, each one provides documentation.
  5. Earn 12 EMDRIA Credits. These are advanced EMDR programs approved by EMDRIA, taken after Basic Training. Before registering, check that a workshop offers EMDRIA Credits and not only general CE hours. The certificate must show the EMDRIA program approval number and the credits earned. See advanced workshops with EMDRIA Credits.
  6. Gather three letters. One comes from an EMDRIA Approved Consultant™ and can double as the consultation documentation. Two come from colleagues or peers.
  7. Notarize the statement and apply. Everything is uploaded to EMDRIA’s online portal, and the fee is paid there. Approval typically takes three to five weeks.

How Much Does EMDR Certification Cost?

EMDRIA’s fees are fixed and non-refundable:

FeeEMDRIA memberNon-member
Application$150$350
Renewal, every two years$100$300

The other costs vary by provider: consultation fees, EMDRIA Credit programs, membership dues for those who join, and notarization. It helps to ask consultants for their rates before starting.

How Long Does EMDR Certification Take?

There is no fixed timeline. The pace depends mostly on how quickly a clinician reaches 50 sessions with 25 clients. Consultation and EMDRIA Credits can run in parallel with that.

The one hard limit is the five-year window for consultation hours. Hours older than that at submission are reviewed case by case, so it pays to keep moving once consultation starts.

Keeping the Credential: Renewal

The credential lasts two years. To renew, certified therapists complete 12 EMDRIA Credits per cycle and pay the renewal fee. EMDRIA sends reminders starting three months before expiration and audits credits rather than asking everyone for documentation.

An expired credential has a three-month grace period. After a year, reinstatement carries a fee; after five years, the full application starts over. Details: EMDRIA Certified Therapist™ Renewal.

Details That Catch Applicants Off Guard

  • The 10 consultation hours inside Basic Training don’t count toward the 20, because only hours received after completing the training count.
  • Basic Training doesn’t earn EMDRIA Credits.
  • The two years of experience in the field of license are a separate requirement from EMDR experience.
  • A Consultant in Training can provide consultation hours, but their letter doesn’t meet the consultant-letter requirement.
  • A letter from a consultant doesn’t count as a peer letter.
  • Fees aren’t refunded, even for denied or incomplete applications. Checking every requirement before paying avoids losing the fee.
  • All materials, including letters, must be in English.
