Created and taught by Amanda Martin, Ph.D., LMFT-S, LPC, BCN, and Jose Carbajal, Ph.D., LCSW this workshop’s focus is to provide an overview of the research findings available and to help clinicians develop a neurodiverse perspective when working with neurodivergent clients in clinical settings.
EMDR therapy is effective and useful for most clients with proper preparation. This training provides an overview of the EMDR guidelines for autism.

  • Summarize recent EMDR therapy research with neurodivergent clients
  • Integrate clinical adaptations for working with neurodivergent clients
  • Distinguish similarities and differences between PTSD symptoms and autism
  • Explain adaptations for EMDR reprocessing with clients who have autism and ADHD
  • Video demonstrations of EMDR preparation and protocol

The training will include cautions, recommendations, and tips for working with neurodivergent clients and adaptations to EMDR processing with neurodivergent clients, including with children and adults.

A review of how autism and complex posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms can present with similar symptoms and how clinicians can assess for differences or comorbidity is provided. Demonstrations and a scripted handout include new resource development and installation methods. Receive a guide to assist you in gathering adequate information, recognizing client readiness for EMDR, identifying client needs, and creating a treatment plan for EMDR reprocessing.

Amanda Martin

Meet Amanda

Amanda Martin has a Ph.D. in Family Therapy and is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Supervisor and EMDRIA Approved Consultant for EMDR.

She has over 14 years of experience and specializes in working with people and families with trauma histories in residential and outpatient settings. In addition, she provides supervision for EMDR certification and EMDR consultants-in-training and LMFT associates.

Dr. Carbajal has several publications and he has conducted many professional presentations and trainings. His research focuses on the interventions clinicians use to treat trauma, neuroscience, and faith.

He has over 15 years of clinical experience and he has extensive teaching experience, leading seminars, and workshops. His clinical specialties are trauma, sexual abuse recovery, domestic violence, and substance abuse. He is EMDR Certified, an Approved Consultant, and an EMDRIA Approved Trainer in EMDR.

How to Join

On the day of (August 2, 2024, at 9:00 am CST), you will access the Zoom.us link to the live instruction through the CompassionWorks.com user account you create or log into upon checkout. The workshop will be located under My Courses when you click on your username. You will need to be able to have a quiet space for participation with your fully functioning computer connected to the internet. Your computer must have full audio and video capabilities. Dr. Amber Quaranta-Leech, LPC-S

Amber holds a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from Regent University. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor in both Texas and Oklahoma and holds Supervisor credential for Texas. Amber is an EMDRIA consultant and trainer. She has over a decade of experience in the trauma field in work with uniformed services, domestic violence, childhood trauma and abuse, and recent mass trauma events. Amber provides consultation for EMDRIA certification, for consultants-in-training, and supervision for LPC-Associates. Amber continues to research the benefits of EMDR therapy with a variety of populations. Her goal is to help build strong clinicians who are well versed in trauma interventions to better support their clients. Amber sees a limited number of clients with a focus on trauma work, she is also a Certified Career Counselor and Certified through EAGALA to provide equine-assisted therapy. 

Dr. Jose Carbajal, LCSW

Dr. Jose Carbajal, a U.S. Army veteran, earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work and a master’s in theological studies from Baylor University, and a Ph.D. in Social Work from the University of Texas at Arlington. With over 15 years of clinical experience and extensive teaching experience, Jose specializes in trauma, sexual abuse recovery, domestic violence, and substance abuse. His research focuses on trauma interventions, neuroscience, and faith. He is EMDR Certified, an Approved Consultant, and an EMDRIA Approved Trainer, with numerous publications and professional presentations to his name.
